RAC Foundation Funds Exciting Research into VR for Road Safety Testing

The RAC Foundation has commissioned Jellylearn and Nottingham Trent University (NTU) to undertake a unique research project about the pros and cons of using Virtual Reality (VR) versus non-VR for hazard perception testing and training content.

NTU will lead the project, with Jellylearn developing a 360-degree 10-minute CGI clip depicting various types of road hazards — based on the same format and fidelity as the current HP test used by the DVSA, who will also be contributing resources to the project. The clip will contain hazard scenarios currently not included in the HP test, based around a hazard prediction model. This research will explore whether VR technology can further enhance the effectiveness of hazard perception training and assessment.
